MAIMANA (Pajhwok): A dozen militants including three commanders have been killed in a security operation in north eastern Faryab province, officials said on Tuesday.
Col. Toryali Abdyani, the provincial police chief, said the fighters were killed over the last 24 hours in Garziwan, Shirin Tagab, Qaisar and Ghormach districts.
He told Pajhwok Afghan News Taliban commanders Abdul Wahab, Abdul Ali and Abdullah were among the fatalities. A student was also injured during clashes between the two sides, he added.
Afghan National Army, Police and National Directorate of Security (NDS) personnel are conducting operations to ensure the conduct of peaceful elections.
Earlier, the provincial election commission asked security forces to take effective steps to secure Saturday’s polls in the province.
