GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Dozens of militants were killed and wounded in a clearing operation by the Afghan National Army (ANA) and police in the Gilan district of southern Ghazni province, officials said on Monday.
At least 23 insurgents were killed and 13 others wounded during the ongoing operation that was launched three day back, the governor’s spokesman Shafiq Nang told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Hamidullah, the district chief, said the operation was aimed to purge Janan, Spin Ghondi and some other villages of anti-state elements.
In Kabul, the Ministry of Interior said 50 militants had been killed and 36 wounded in the operation. But the Ministry of Defence put the death toll for fighters at 36.
Nazifullah Sultani, spokesman for Thunder Military Corps, said 23 guerrillas lost their lives and 13 other suffered wounds during the offensive.
On the other hand, the Taliban acknowledged the loss of only three fighters. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed 17 security personnel had been killed in Gilan clashes.
