KABUL (Pajhwok): UN Security Council members have welcomed the announcement of the final results from the first round of the presidential election.
Security Council members reiterated their commendation of the Afghan government, electoral institutions and security forces on the holding the elections on 5 April.
In a statement, they applaud the courage of the Afghan people who participated in record numbers despite threats and intimidation by the Taliban and other extremist groups.
The members encouraged the Afghans to continue to engage in the election process as it moved forward and recognised the important role of the Independent Election Commission and the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission.
They underlined the need for efforts to continue to ensure the integrity of the electoral process, including the detection and prevention of fraud.
The members acknowledged the respect all candidates have demonstrated for the electoral process and urged stakeholders, particularly the remaining two runners and their supporters, to continue engaging with the electoral institutions.
They reiterate the commitment of the international community to Afghanistan’s transition and welcomed the ongoing support role of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
