MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Seven policemen have been killed in a militant attack in the Chamtal district of northern Balkh province, an official said on Friday.
Abdul Matin, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News dozens of Taliban on motorbikes attacked police checkpoints in Joi Khar area with light and heavy weapons on Thursday evening.
Seven policemen were killed in the assault, he said, adding four of the attackers were also eliminated in the ensuing gunbattle that lasted four hours. Three fighters were wounded.
Atta Mohammad, the uncle of a policeman killed in the attack, said: “I’m proud of my nephew’s martyrdom. He has laid down his life for Afghanistan.” The victim was laid to rest today.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, claimed the fighters had killed seven policemen and seized three check posts. He, however, denied the loss of any militant.
