MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Suspected Taliban insurgents shot dead a local police commander along with his guest in a mountainous area in northern Balkh province, police said on Friday.
Khiyal Mohammad, the local police commander in the Sholgar district, had gone on excursion to Bodnai Qala area with his guest late on Thursday night, when two motorcyclists opened fire at them, killing both, the deputy provincial police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Col. Abdul Raziq Qadri said the attackers had disappeared into nearby Albarz Mountains and a manhunt was underway to nab them. Police had seized the motorcycle used in the attack.
A resident of the area, Ghulam Mohammad, said the attackers had been hiding in trees and opened fire at the local police commander and his guest as they arrived.
The Taliban have so far said nothing about the attack that took place two days after a local police commander in the Chamtal district was gunned down in a similar ambush.
