HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Eight insurgents have renounced violence and joined the government-initiated peace process in western Herat province, an official said on Thursday.
The eight-member group was earlier involved in insurgent activities in Guzra district, the governor’s spokesman Abdul Rauf Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Led by Ghulam Siddique, the group surrendered weapons they used in insurgent activities. The spokesman lauded the role of tribal elders in persuading the rebels to join the reconciliation process.
The group commander said: “We had carried out insurgent activities in the province for a long time. But now we have decided to join the peace process in larger national interests.”
