SHARAN (Pajhwok): Six thousand poor children will be enrolled in schools during this academic year, a Paktika education official promised on Friday.

Director of Education Kochai Zazai said that government would build schools with the support of international organisation in backward areas, with fewer educational facilities.

The proposed schools will provide free education up to 3rd grade, according to the director, who said they had delivered textbooks to most schools in different districts.

Zazai added the delivery of books and other scholastic materials would resolve the problems previously faced by students. The issue would be permanently addressed, he promised.

There are 358 schools across the province but only a third of them have proper buildings. Twenty schools have been constructed in the last two years.

At least 100 more schools would be built next year, Zazai said, citing the lack of buildings and professional teachers as main hurdles to promoting education in Paktika.

He demanded support from locals to promote education, particularly among girls. Of the 155,000 school students in Paktika, 62,000 are girls.
