Flash floods wreak havoc in Kunar, Nangarhar

ASADABAD/JALALABAD (Pajhwok):  Flash floods swept away dozens of homes and inundated hundreds of acres of farmland in eastern Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, officials said on Monday.

Kunar natural disasters management director Ghulam Sabat told Pajhwok Afghan News heavy rains in Pakistaninfo-icon’s Chitral district flooded the Kunar River that unleashed waters on a number of districts in the province.

He said the floods played havoc and caused financial losses to people in Sarkano and Khas Kunar districts, destroying 37 homes, partially damaging a mosqueinfo-icon and maize and rice crops on 425 acres of land.

He said the floods had inflicted losses on residents in Nari, Manogai and Chapa Dara districts and a delegation had been dispatched to these areas to assess the damage.

There were no casualties in the disaster because people of these areas had been informed in advance about the flooding.

In Nangarhar, floods destroyed 10 homes and a school building and inundated hundreds of acres of agricultural lands in Kama district, the governor’s spokesman said.

Ahmad Zia Abdulzai added nearly one hundred families had displaced as a result of the flooding.

A resident of Kama district, Babrak, told Pajhwok Afghan News large swaths of agricultural land were damaged by the floods.
