JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Agricultureinfo-icon and Livestock has started distributing improved quality wheat seeds and chemical fertilizer to 8,000 farmers in eastern Nangarhar province, an official said Monday.

Governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the seed and fertilizer were being given to farmers who were members of cooperatives in Nangarhar.

He said the distribution of agriculture inputs would help farmers improve their economic situation and make them self-reliant.

The distribution process began in Behsud district on Sunday. Nangarhar agriculture director Prof. Rafiullah Rahmizai said the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock planned to distribute 400 metric tons of improved quality seeds and 1,000 metric tons of chemical fertilizers to Nangarhar farmers.

The seeds have better quality and accepted in the whole of the country, he said, adding the fertilizer was produced in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province.

Behsud district chief, Mohammad Seddiq Dawlatzai, said the assistance would help farmers improve economic and crops situation.

He and a number of local tribal elders had asked the government to increase the assistance to farmers.

Ahmad Gul, a farmer who benefited from the assistance, said the distribution of seeds and fertilizer would help improve the quality of their crops and boost their economy.
