Ready to deal with Daesh: Ghazni governor

Ready to deal with Daesh: Ghazni governor

Jan 02, 2017 - 14:59

GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): Daesh or so-called Islamic State (IS) militant group has emerged in the Gilan district of southern Ghazni province, the provincial governor said on Monday, assuring ‘they are fully prepared to deal with the outfit.’

Governor Abdul Karim Matin, who visited Jaghori district, told Pajhowk Afghan News that security forces had put in place elaborate security measures to prevent Daesh attacks and not let the group achieve its goals.

Addressing local residents, he said: “I have heard that the IS wants to storm Jaghori and kill innocent people but I would never allow them to do so.”

Matin promised to discuss the threat posed by the IS with authorities in neighbouring Zabul province.

Ghazni’s Gilan district shares border with Khak-i-Afghan district of Zabul. Matin said Daesh group had settled on the border between the two districts. Some Daesh members lived with families there, he added.

Jaghori residents said they were worried about Daesh presence in Gilan. A tribal elder in Jaghori, Ali Hussain, said: “We have no problem here but Gilan-based Daesh militants want to attack our district.’

He urged the government to take serious steps against Daesh in Gilan at the earliest possible.

Meanwhile, provincial police chief Brig. Gen. Aminullah Amarkhel said Daesh affiliates also traveled to Nawa, Jaghto and Andar districts of the province.

“Daesh are stationed in Khak-i-Afghan and Angoor Ada districts. The militants only travel in Ghazni and don’t have any specific centres.”

He said they were completely ready to deal with Daesh and not let them reach their goals in Ghazni.

Ghazni is the third most insecure province of Afghanistaninfo-icon after Kunduz and Helmand provinces. The province’s Nawa district has been under Talibaninfo-icon control over the past 14 years.
