8 killed, 14 injured in Helmand car bombing

Mar 21, 2017 - 11:43

LASHKAR GAH (Pajhwok); Eight security personnel have been killed and more than a dozen others injured in a suicide car bombing in southern Helmand province, officials on Tuesday.

The provincial police chief told Pajhwok Afghan News the suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden car at a special police unit checkpoint in Greshk district late on Monday night.

Meanwhile, the governor’s spokesman Omar Zwak confirmed the bombing, but he had no information on casualties. An investigation into the incident had been launched, he said.

Mohammad Ismail Khpalwak, the district police head, said a Datsun pick-up -- similar to the one used by the security personnel -- was detonated in the overnight assault.

Because of the pick-up, he said, the insurgents managed to reach the checkpoint. At least eight security officials were killed and 14 others injured, Khpalwak added.

An Emergency Hospital official in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, also verified the bombing. But the casualties were not brought to Emergency Hospital.

The dead and injured might have been evacuated to a hospital in neighbouring Kandahar province, the source believed.
