KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A two-year ‘green and clean city’ program was launched on Wednesday in the capital city of southern Kandahar province.

Governor Zalmai Weesa, Mayor Eng. Rokhan Walasmal, municipal districts representatives and other officials attended the program’s inauguration ceremony here.

Mayor Walasmal told Pajhwok Afghan News that the USAIDinfo-icon-funded ‘Clean and Green City’ scheme was being implemented by UN-Habitat and the Kandahar Municipality.

He said establishing recreational areas in municipal districts of Kandahar city, extraction of gunshots, public awareness about urban culture and others constituted main parts of the program.

According to him, the scheme would be implemented in two years at a total cost of $1.8 million, providing many job opportunities to people.

Governor Weea appreciated the municipality for launching vital programs and projects aimed at facilitating people.

He said urban development wasn’t only the duty of municipality, but people had also a lot of responsibility in this regard.

UN-Habitat representative, Nadar Shah Zagham, said the project’s main focus would be creating green areas in Kandahar City.

Municipality officials dubbed the program as useful, hinting at the launch of another 5-year program worth $32 million named “Wolasi Taroon” in near future.

Kandahar Municipality has launched more than 300 uplift projects since last year and of which some have been completed and work on some others is ongoing.
