KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A majority of the insurgents wants to reconcile, says NATOinfo-icon and US forces top commander in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

At the same, Gen. John Nicholson said pressure on the rebels was simultaneously maintained.

Addressing a gathering at the governor’s house in Kandahar City, the capital of southern Kandahar province, Nicholson said they would bring more diplomatic pressure on Pakistaninfo-icon to help bring peace to Afghanistan.

Diplomatic, military and social pressures on the insurgents would be increased to help accelerate the reconciliation process, he added.

Interior Minister Wais Barmak, National Director of Security (NDSinfo-icon) chief Masum Stanikzai, Kandahar Governor Zalmai Weesa and other high ranking officials were present on the occasion.

The US general said peace tents erected by social activists in different provinces and upcoming polls were social pressure on insurgents to accept the peace offer.

He also said NATO would help ensure future elections were conducted in a free fair and transparent manner and NATO forces would cooperate in this regard.

Governor Weesa highlighted issues relating to security and rehabilitation in Kandahar and demanded more cooperation in this regard.
