PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Six members of an Afghan family have been shot dead in Pakistaninfo-icon’s northwestern city of Peshawar.

The killings resulted from an exchange of gunfire between two families in the Mata Bachay area in the limits of the Inqilab Police Station on Tuesday.

“An exchange of fire took place between two rival groups -- one led by Bashir and the other by Abdul Ghaffar,” a police officer said.

Shaukat Khan, superintendent of Saddar police, told journalists the Bashir group killed six members of Abdul Ghafar’s family and one of his own supporters.

Six Afghan brothers were killed while two others, including their father Abdul Ghaffar, were wounded. A case has been registered against Riaz, Bashir, Saifullah and others.

Two pistols, one Kalakov and a Kalashnikov rifles were recovered by police and two accused arrested.

Abdul Ghaffar told police Subhan, Anwarullah, Riaz, Bashir, Amjad, Saifullah, Malang and Sanaullah opened fire on them after an exchange of hot words.

Six of his sons -- Rehmatullah, Inayatullah, Sharafat, Qadir, Javed and Niamatullah -- were killed, he added.

One source, meanwhile, told Pajhwok Afghan News tensions emerged between the two sides after the Afghan family rejected a marriage proposal from a relative of Bashir.

The source said: “The Pakistani family looked prepared for punishing the Afghans, who apparently didn’t expect such a cruel reaction to their refusal.”
