Jul 25, 2018 - 11:29

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): At least 28 people were killed and 35 others injured in a suicide attack in the capital of Pakistaninfo-icon’s Balochistan province on Wednesday as millions thronged polling stations across the country.

The bombing occurred close to a polling station on the Eastern By-Pass in Quetta, a senior police official said. The apparent target was a police convoy passing the crowded and sensitive area.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Abdul Razzaq Cheema confirmed 28 people, including a policeman and a child, were killed in the attack. Five of the injured were evacuated to the Civil Hospital.

A state of emergency was declared at the hospital, where the injured were taken. Some of the wounded are said to be struggling for life, with the death toll likely to rise.

Millions of registered voters are flocking to polling stations across the country to cast their vote in Pakistan’s 11th general election. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) are the major parties in the electoral race.

Earlier, a shooting between supporters of two opposing political parties left one person dead and wounded two others in a village near the northwestern city of Swabi.
