Tens of thousands of Kandahar kids to miss polio drops

Tens of thousands of Kandahar kids to miss polio drops

Aug 06, 2018 - 19:52

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): A three-day polio vaccination campaign was launched in southern Kandahar province on Monday, but children in five districts could not be administered the drops due to certain reasons.

Shah Walikot, Khakrez, Ghorak, Meyanshin and Maroof are districts where the polio vaccination could not take place. In Kandahar, positive polio cases reached five this year.

Public Healthinfo-icon Director Abdul Qayyum Pukhla, who inaugurated the campaign, said 567,000 children under the age of five years would be administered the polio drops in Kandahar during the three-day campaign.

He said the vaccination drive might not be conducted in some districts where 108,000 children would be missed out.

Abdul Shkour Nasrat, another senior public health official, accused the Talibaninfo-icon of not allowing the polio vaccination.

He said the Taliban wanted children to be vaccinated at mosques while according to the general policy polio teams should visit each home to ensure all children were given the drops.

He said tribal elders and ulemainfo-icon sent to the Taliban were unable to resolve the issue.

In 2017, 14 polio cases surfaced nationwide, with seven emerging in Kandahar.
