Kabul aware of Taliban-Uzbekistan talks: HPC

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): High Peace Councilinfo-icon (HPC) has said they were aware of talks between the Talibaninfo-icon and the government of Uzbekistan, an official said on Sunday.

HPC Spokesman Syed Ihsan Taheri told Pajhwok Afghan News the government of Afghanistaninfo-icon and the HPC was aware of the talks between the Taliban and Uzbek officials.

He said foreign minister of Uzbekistan visited Kabul few days back and inform the Afghan government about their talks with the Taliban.

He said during Tashkent Conference the Uzbek president had offered to host negotiation between Afghan government and the Taliban.

The HPC spokesman said Afghan government welcomed facilitation and mediatory role of Uzbekistan.

He, however, recalled the reconciliation process was led and owned by Afghan government and the third party could only facilitate such talks.

The Taliban delegation has discussed security for major projects with senior Uzbek government officials, a spokesman for the insurgent movement said on Sunday.

Led by Sher Muhammad Abbas Stanikzai, head of Taliban’s political office in Qatar, the team visited Uzbekistan from August 6 to 10 in response to a formal invitation from Tashkent.

A statement from the Taliban spokesman said the visiting delegation met Foreign Minister Abdul Aziz Kamilov and the Uzbek president’s special representative for Afghanistan Ismatulla Irgashev.

The two sides discussed current and future projects such as security for a proposed railroad and power transmission lines. Views were exchanged on withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan.
