Shift Baghlan capital back to its original place, govt asked

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Dozens of people on Saturday carried out a protest demonstration in this capital city of northern Baghlan province and blocked a key road for two hours to demand shifting back the provincial capital to Baghlan-i-Markazi district.

One of the protestors, Abdul Hamid, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Pul-i-Khumri was not the real capital of Baghlan province because the city did not house all government departments.

He said the capital from Baghlan-i-Markazi district was shifted Pul-i-Khumri as a temporary measure by the then rulers and should be shifted back to its original place.

He said the Baghlan-i-Markazi district had appropriate places for the governor’s house and other departments.

Another protestor, Mubariz Rafiqzoy, said: “Since the capital’s relocation to Pul-i-Khumri, the residents of Baghlan-i-Markazi districts have been deprived of their due rights --- a reason today we carried out the protest.”

He said President Ashraf Ghani during his initial years in office had promised to shift back the provincial capital to Baghlan-i-Markazi district, but the promise remained unfulfilled.

Other protestors expressed similar views. They kept the Baghlan-Kunduz highway closed against traffic for two hours.

Baghlan governor Abdul Hai Nimati said the Baghlan-i-Markazi police chief had been tasked with convincing the protestors to end the road blockade.

“Now is not the time to close roads and shift the governor’s house back to its previous location because the country’s leaders are busy dealing with two important issues --- the peace process and presidential election. So this is not an appropriate demand. “

The protestors called off their demonstration and reopened the road after local officials assured them that elders of the Baghlan-i-Markazi district would be meeting the president soon.

Nearly 27 years ago, the capital of Baghlan province was shifted to Pul-i-Khumri from Baghlan-i-Markazi district due to some problems at the time.
