US Marine Corps assist several Helmand schools

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): American marine forces on Thursday provided different materials worth more than 200,000 USD in aid to a number of schools in southern Helmand province, officials said Thursday.

Helmand educationinfo-icon director Daud Shah Safari, talking to a ceremony on the occasion, said he had recently met with US marine corps personnel based in Helmand and asked them for equipment assistance to a number of schools.

He said the US marines provided different types of equipment to the schools worth 212,000 USD today.

The equipment included 720 desks and chairs, 2,500 carpets, thousands of books and pens and water jugs, he said.

“This assistance would continue, but we would distribute the equipment to schools in high need,” he said.

Safari added the materials would resolve most of the problems in schools and improve the education process.

Abdul Khaliq, a student of Shahid Abdul Matin High School in Lashkargah, the provincial capital, said besides books and notebooks, they also needed desks and chairs.

“We are happy today because of the assistance, but it should be extended to other schools as well,” he said.

Sharifullah, a student of Greshk High School in Greshk district, said that many schools in the district lacked carpets, books and other educational materials.

“Several months have passed since the academic year started, but seventh, eighth and ninth grade students still lack books,” he said.
