BRUSSELS (Pajhwok): NATOinfo-icon Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday said the alliance fully supported US efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

“Afghanistan will be an important point on our agenda at a meeting of nations contributing to our training mission,” he told reporters here ahead of NATO defence ministers’ gathering here.

Stoltenberg said while the security situation remained serious, there was a unique opportunity for peace in Afghanistan. “Allies fully support US efforts to reach a peaceful settlement in Afghanistan.”

He said NATO’s continued commitment,
both with forces and funding, was key to creating the conditions for peace

A future presence of forces in the war-torn country would depend on a potential peace deal, but it was too early to speculate on the issue, he remarked.

He condemned Talibaninfo-icon’s threats and all violence against journalists, calling freedom of the press a fundamental value.
