Pul-i-Charki prisoners demand steps to contain Covid-19

Mar 24, 2020 - 20:18

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Prisoners held at the Pul-i-Charkhi prison are complaining against lack of medicines, cash and not allowing their relatives to meet them besides fearing corona virus.

The Prisoners Council of this prison dispatched a formal letter to Pajhwok Afghan News in which they explained problems being faced by them.

The prisoners complained after ban on visitors, shortage of money, food and medicines, demanding serious steps to halt the spread of coronavirus.

Niyaz Mohammad, one of the prisoners, said a delegation arrived in the prison and pledged to take steps for prevention of coronavirus but no practical step had been taken as yet.

Khalilullah Zia, deputy head of the Independent Prisoners Administration, said ban on visitors was imposed on the will of prisoners.

“Besides a clinic, a quarantined facility has been established in the prison where 14 doctors have been assigned,” he said.

He said visits from outside had been reduced in the prison, anti-virus spray was administered regularly and other precautionary steps were in place, but the resources available with them were insufficient.
