Uruzganis ask govt to release Rahim Khan

Jun 02, 2020 - 16:11

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents of central Uruzgan province on Tuesday protested to demand the release of an influential tribal elder.

The elder, Rahim Khan, brother of former Uruzgan police chief Matiullah Khan, was arrested last year over possessing illegal weapons and he was kept in Pul-i-Charkhi prison before sending him to the Bagram jail.

Rahim Khan faces accusations ranging from collapse of several security check-posts to other illegally activities in the province.

As the government has started releasing Talibaninfo-icon prisoners, residents of Uruzgan called on the government to release Rahim Khan as well to join his family.

Former deputy governor Khuda Rahim Khan told the huge protesting gathering that the government had arrested many powerful individuals before and after the arrest of Rahim Khan but they were freed.

He said after the arrest of Rahim Khan, his family faced with multiple problems.

Maleem Rahmatullah, another tribal elder, called on President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani to release Rahim Khan to end the ordeal of his family.

He said by releasing Rahim Khan, security incidents would also decrease in the province.

The rally participants said they were ready to guarantee Rahim Khan’s political activities and would stay with the government. They said President Ghani did not visit Uruzgan during his previous and current term in office.
