Afghan deaths in Turkey being investigated

Jul 08, 2020 - 19:12

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Afghanistaninfo-icon Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday said investigations were being into the Afghan refugees’ deaths after two boats capsized in Turkey.

Reports say around 80 migrants, including a number of Afghans, were aboard the two boats.

Gran Hiwad, MoFA spokesman, told media persons here that after few hours of the incident, the ministry dispatched a delegation to the site of incident to recognize bodies of the Afghan nationals in the area.

Turkey's Coast Guard Command rescued more than two dozen asylum-seekers from two boats in the Aegean Sea.

The Greek coast guard pushed two life rafts carrying 26 people back toward the coast of the Aslan Burnu district in Turkey's western Izmir province.

All of the rescued asylum-seekers were transferred to the provincial immigration authority.

Recent months have seen multiple reports of Greek forces illegally pushing back boats of asylum-seekers, endangering the passengers in the process.

Turkey has been a key transit point for asylum-seekers aiming to cross to Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

Turkey currently hosts over 3.7 million Syrians, making it the worldinfo-icon's top migrant-hosting country.
