HIA checkpoint eliminated in Wardak

HIA checkpoint eliminated in Wardak

Feb 20, 2011 - 13:49

MAIDAN SHAHR (PANinfo-icon): Afghan and NATOinfo-icon-led forces eliminated an illegal checkpoint operated by militants in central Maidan Wardak province, officials said on Sunday.

Hezb-i-Islamiinfo-icon Afghanistaninfo-icon (HIA) insurgents had been operating the checkpoint for the last few months in the Khanjankhel area of Nirkh district, where money was extorted from drivers.

The check post was closed by Afghan and international forces on Dec. 27, 2010 but the militants returned after two days and kept it operative until Saturday evening, when it was eliminated.

Having an operational centre on the second storey of a building in the area, the insurgents escaped before the overnight operation, Nirkh district chief, Muhammad Hanif Hanifi, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A desk, chairs, a notebook, handcuffs and other equipment were seized by the joint security force. The gunmen were members of HIA, said resident Fazlul Haq. The rebels charged an unlawful tax of 3,000 afghanis ($66.064) on each apples-laden truck.
