Toll from Faryab blast goes up

Toll from Faryab blast goes up

Feb 27, 2011 - 17:44

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PANinfo-icon): The toll from a suicide attack on a Buzkashiinfo-icon ground in northern Faryab province has increased to three dead and 41 wounded, officials said on Sunday.

A day earlier, two spectators were killed and 25 others injured when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives during the popular sportinfo-icon event in Shirin Tagab district.

A joint team of Afghan and foreign soldiers had been to the area, where they ascertained the toll, said the ISAFinfo-icon Provincial Reconstructioninfo-icon Team. Some of the wounded civilians were taken to a local hospital and others to an ISAF healthinfo-icon facility.

Police spokesman, Lt. Sayed Massoud Yaqubi, confirmed the information.

As usual, Talibaninfo-icon fighters asserted responsibility for the attack, saying eight government officials, including some provincial council members, were killed and 15 others wounded.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Faryab Provincial Council members -- Hashim and Gul Mohammad Palawan -- had been killed in the explosion.
