Taliban district chief killed in Baghlan

Mar 08, 2011 - 14:23

PUL-I-KHUMRI (PANinfo-icon): A Talibaninfo-icon-designated district chief was killed and three other fighters were detained during a joint operation in northern Baghlan province, officials said on Tuesday.

The insurgent head for Baraka district was killed during an operation late on Monday night by Afghan and International Security Assistance Force, a statement from the alliance said.

The commander supported insurgents in Baghlan, Kunduz and Takhar provinces, the statement added. Civilians were not harmed.

But local officials were unaware of the Taliban district chief's killing. One guerrilla was killed and three others were held in Ganda Chashma area, said police chief, Brig. Gen. Abdul Rahman Rahimi.

"The overnight operation was conducted to destroy Taliban hideouts in the area," said a member of provincial council, Qudratullah. A civilian was also killed by foreign troops, he claimed.
