Mar 09, 2011 - 13:29

MAHMOOD RAQI (PANinfo-icon): The ministry of counternarcotics allocated nearly $1.6 million (72. million afghanis) for central Kapisa province, for its fight against poppy cultivation, officials said on Wednesday.

Each year, the counternarcotics ministry offers a financial reward to provinces where the degree of poppy cultivation is below zero, Kapisa head of counternarcotics department, Abdul Aleem Ayar told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The cultivation of poppies in Kapisa has been below zero since 2008 and the money it receives from the ministry is spent on development projects in accordance with people’s demands, he added.

The money will be spent on power extension and a highway, he said.
