Wood storehouse catches fire in Kabul

Mar 24, 2011 - 15:02

KABULinfo-icon (PANinfo-icon): A wood storehouse caught fire overnight causing financial losses to a number of sellers in the Qalacha area of Kabul city, officials said on Thursday.

The cause of the fire was not clear and the incident is being investigated, Kabul deputy police chief, Col. Mohammad Zahir, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The fire brigade was able to put out the fire within an hour, he said.

The fire caused financial losses of more than 1 million afghanis ($22,000), but the amount of wood stored in the area was worth about 10 million afghanis.

“I received a phone call at 11:45pm that the market had caught fire and when I arrived, the firefighters were already there,” a wood trader, Hazrat, said.

Hazrat thanked police for their quick action, saying, the wood belonged to six traders and was worth $2.5 million.

He claimed the losses were worth $300,000.
