QALAT (PANinfo-icon): Suspected Talibaninfo-icon shot dead a prominent football player in southern Zabul province, officials said on Tuesday.

Sayed Mohammad, who headed a football team in Shahjoy district, was traveling in a car when gunmen opened fire at him west of the district bazaar late on Monday, the district chief, Abdul Qayum, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The victim was a renowned footballer in the district and had no affiliation with any political party or armed group, he said.

Two friends of the victim had been arrested over suspicion and were being interrogated, the district chief said.

Khaliqdad, a resident of Shahjoy bazaar, said Mohammad was killed in the crossfire between Taliban and Afghan soldiers after the insurgents attacked their base in the area.

The Taliban have so far made no comment on the incident.
