KABUL‘s restive south, the alliance confirmed in a statement on Friday.

The servicemember died following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in southern Afghanistan on Thursday,” a brief ISAF statement said.

Another NATO service member was killed in an insurgent attack in country’s eastern region on the same day Thursday.

However, the military alliance did not disclose the nationalities of the victims in line with its policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.

Troops mainly from the United States, Britain, Canada and Australia have been stationed in the southern region within the framework of ISAF while troops mostly from the US are deployed in eastern part of the insurgency-hit country to fight Taliban militants.

The fresh deaths brought the number of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of this year to 117, with majority of them Americans.
