KABUL): President Hamid Karzai met the Italian minister for economic development at the Presidential Palace in Kabul on Tuesday.

Karzai and Paolo Romani, currently heading a 40-member delegation to Afghanistan, discussed a number of issues, including Italian investment in Afghanistan’s power and fuel sectors.

The visiting team briefed the president on its meeting with the minister of mines, a statement from Karzai’s office said. Italian entrepreneurs were interested in investing in the power sector.

Italy’s Ministry of Development would send a delegation to pave the ground for investment, Romani told the president. Karzai has thanked Rome for supporting Kabul.

Earlier in the day, the Italian minister told reporters that in addition to military assistance, Rome would continue to support development and reconstruction projects in Afghanistan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Zalmay Rassoul, who signed an agreement with Romani, said Italy and Afghanistan established diplomatic relations 90 years back. The two countries had been good friends, he added.
