GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Growers from the Khwaja Omari district of southern Ghazni province received agricultural assistance, including farm spray pumps and shears, on Saturday, an official said.

Dozens of gardeners and farmers were given the equipment by the Ghazni-based Provincial Reconstruction) and Peace Foundation, the district chief told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Mohammad Qasim Desiwal said the PRT donated 38 spray pumps, clothes, glasses, scissors and masks while the Peace Foundation provided 475 pruning shears. Growers from the fertile, green district needed a variety of tools, he added.

The foundation will impart six-month training to the recipients on proper use of the equipment, according to the district chief, who recalled: “Last year, our farmers sold per seven kilograms of apples for 60 afghanis ($1.31). The apples were later imported from neighbouring Pakistan, with the same amounting costing 200 afs.”

One of the gardeners, Qurban, said the donations could not meet all their requirements. However, the tools would help reduce their problems, he hoped, saying the equipment was meant only for 15 farmers.

Khwaja Omari local council chief, Abdul Sami Sharifi, thanked the donors and urged them to pay greater attention to the welfare of growers from the remote district, which produces 60 percent of Ghazni’s apples and plums.
