KABUL this year, when as many as 3,335 hectares of land sown with the illegal plant was eradicated, an official said on Tuesday.
A recent report issued by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) indicated that poppies were cultivated over 110,000 hectares of land in the country this year, said deputy to interior ministry on counter-narcotics, Baz Mohammad Ahmadi.
He said the UNODC report showed 10 percent decrease in poppy cultivation. The crop sown over nearly 3,335 hectares of land was eradicated during the last three months, he said.
As many as 18 counternarcotics policemen lost their lives with another 23 sustaining injuries since the anti-poppy campaign was launched three months ago, he said.
The drive was conducted in Helmand, Nimroz, Kandahar, Daikundi, Herat, Farah, Badghis, Kunar, Kabul, Nangarhar and Kapisa, he said.
Most of poppy fields were destroyed in southern Helmand, Kandahar, Nimroz, Nangarhar and Kabul provinces. The campaign will also be extended to northwestern Badakhshan province, Ahmadi said
