KABUL): Unknown gunmen shot and hanged to death a man from a tree in central Uruzgan province, where the bullet-riddled body of a police officer was found on Friday, officials said.

The man was hanged four kilometres from Tirinkot, the provincial capital, late on Thursday night, police chief, Col. Fazl Ahmad Sherzad, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He said he had no details about the dead person, but an investigation into the incident had been launched. The police chief suspected old enmity behind the murder.

The bullet-riddled body of a police officer was found on Friday morning in Chinarpan area on the outskirts of Tirinkot, according to Sherzad. He said the slain officer had gone missing a month back.

A police official in Tirinkot, Nimatullah, identified the killed officer as Lt. Sabar Gul. He said Gul’s brother was killed a week back and his body was found with the help of tribal elders. He said there had been opposition from some segments in the area to working with police.

Provincial crime branch chief, Col. Gulab Khan, said initial investigation revealed Gul was travelling in a car when two unknown men had sought lift from him. He suspected the two unknown men might have killed the officer.

There was no claim of responsibility for the killing.
