MAIMANA (PAN): Afghan forces and their international partners wrapped up a joint operation codenamed Wahdat-2 in northern Faryab province near the border with Turkmenistan, military officials announced on Wednesday.
The 10-day offensive was conducted in Pakhtun Kot, Almar, Shirin Tagab and Daulatabad districts of the province, the commander of the first brigade of 209th Military Corps, Gen. Noor Mohammad Hamid, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
The Taliban put up a resistance only in Almar district, where four insurgents were killed, two others injured and as many detained. A large number of rebels fled the province, he said. The joint force and civilians suffered no casualties.
However, the commander said they were unable to establish checkpoints in districts cleared of insurgents due to a lack of the security personnel. A new operation could be launched if the Taliban staged a comeback, Hamid added.
“Afghan and foreign forces searched our houses without any reason and destroyed our crops by driving vehicles in fields,” a resident Karim, said. “The security personnel did not establish any checkpoints in the district.”
A provincial council member, Angar, said security forces had abandoned a checkpoint in Khwaja Gauhar bazaar. He believed deserting the post would encourage fighters to return.
