NILI & QALA-I-NAW (PAN): Three people lost their lives and a dozen others sustained injuries in two separate road accidents in central Daikundi and northwestern Badghis provinces, officials said on Saturday.

The three died when a mini bus skidded off a road and overturned in Ghodar area on the outskirts of Neili, Daikundi’s capital, traffic official, Lt. Rahman, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The dead included a child and a woman and two others women were injured in the incident, he said.

The driver had stopped the minibus, but a child putthe handbrake down, Rahman said, adding the victims were from the same family.

A doctor on duty at Zahra Bayat Hospital, Dr. Ali Akbar Qasmi, confirmed receiving two injured women. One of them was shifted to Kabul for treatment for being critical, he said.

“The driver stopped the vehicle on a slope and got down to collect rue plants when a child pushed the handbrake down,” a relative of the victims, Hajji Karimi, said.

Separately, another minibus overturned in Sabzak pass on the Herat-Badghis Highway in the northwestern province of Badghis on Saturday, acting provincial police chief, Col. Ghulam Nabi, said.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to speed, leaving 12 people injured, he said. The victims, residents of the Jawand district, were traveling from Herat to Qala-i-Naw.

“The driver could not maintain control of the vehicle due to speed while negotiating a turn,” a witness, Mohammad Shah, said.

Public health director Abdul Aziz said the injured people were in a stable condition.
