KABUL): A Tajikistan resident was sentenced by a primary court to 20 years in jail on the charge of trafficking alcohol, the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) announced on Sunday.

The Tajikistan citizen was detained recently by counternarcotics police in Kunduz City with 2,911 litres of banned beverages that he smuggled in a container from his country into Afghanistan through the Sher Khan Dry Port.

A statement from CJTF said the Tajik was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison during an open trial on the basis of evidence. He had a defence lawyer to plead his case.

Under the relevant law, a convict could move a court of appeal before approaching the Supreme Court against the verdict.

A day earlier, an Iranian woman was sentenced to 20 years in jail on the charge of trafficking more than nine kilograms of heroin.
