MAIDAN SHAHR (PANinfo-icon): A group of Talibaninfo-icon insurgents attacked a convoy of trucks carrying logistic supplies for foreign troops in central Maidan Wardak province on Sunday, setting eight vehicles on fire, witnesses and police said.

The attack that took place on the Kabulinfo-icon-Kandahar highway in the Salar area of Syedabad district in the afternoon sparked a fierce gunbattle between the assailants and security guards escorting the convoy, witness Nusratullah told Pajhwok Afghan News.

The firefight stretched into the evening, he said, adding nearly 10 trucks were torched by the attackers.

District chief, Dr. Muslim, acknowledged the burning of two vehicles in the attack, but the police chief confirmed eight vehicles were torched.

Col. Haq Nawaz Haqyar told Pajhwok Afghan News three Afghan soldiers and as many private security guards were wounded. Security forces had launched a search operation in the area, he said.

Without giving specific figures, the Taliban said they had torched a number of vehicles in the attack, killing several security guards.
