Jun 13, 2011 - 10:51

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PANinfo-icon): Gunmen shot dead a former jihadiinfo-icon commander in the northern province of Balkh, officials said on Monday.

On Sunday, unidentified men on motorcycle gunned down the tribal elder and former jihadi commander, Tahir Ihsan, in the Wardak area of Kholam district, administrative head of the town, Ibrahim Khan, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

They have launched an investigation to determine whether the attackers were motivated by prior enmity or militancy.

A police delegation was sent to the area for the investigation, police spokesman, Sher Khan Durani, said.

Over the past two years, more than 30 tribal elders and influential figures have been killed in the province.

Separately, two policemen were injured and a Talibaninfo-icon fighter was detained during a clash between Taliban insurgents and policemen in Sholgara district of the province, said District Chief Naimatullah.
