KANDAHAR CITY (PAN fighters have been killed in two separate incidents in the Spin Boldak border town of southern Kandahar province, security officials said on Wednesday.

A joint Afghan-international security force conducted an operation late on Tuesday night in the Kanjos village. Backed by air support, the offensive resulted in the killing of nine armed insurgents.

Police chief, Gen. Abdul Raziq, who is also the commander of border police, told Pajhwok Afghan News, the insurgents were attacked while sneaking into the village from the Pakistani side of the frontier.

Five militants were killed during a separate operation in the Amrat village on Wednesday morning, the general said. The rebels were planting roadside bombs when they were attacked by a joint Afghan-international force.

The governor’s office confirmed the incidents, but there has been no word from the Taliban so far.

Security forces have lately stepped up operations against the guerrillas stealing into the town from Pakistan.

Elsewhere, three local policemen were killed when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in central Uruzgan province on Wednesday. The incident happened in Khas Uruzgan district at 7am, said the crime branch chief, Col. Gulab Khan.

The security personnel were on a patrol when they came under attack, he said, adding another two policemen were injured and their vehicle comprehensively damaged.
