MAIMANA (PAN): One Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier, one policeman, and seven insurgents were killed during a joint operation carried out by Afghan and foreign troops in the northern province of Faryab, officials said on Sunday.

The operation, called Wahdat 3, began three days ago. Brig. Gen. Noor Mohammad Hamed, who commands the First Brigade of the Shahin military corps of the Afghan National Army, which operates in Northern Afghanistan, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the aim was to root out insurgents in the Pushton Kot and Kohistan districts of the province.

The fatalities occurred on Saturday when ANA and foreign troops engaged insurgents in the Aaq Dara area of the Pushton Kot district. Brig. Gen. Mohammad said that ANA and foreign troops had also detained three insurgents in addition to the seven killed, and were continuing to operate in the districts.

Abdul Rahman, a resident of the Sar House area of the Pushton Kot district, said that no civilian casualties had occurred on Saturday, and that residents were satisfied with the ongoing operations.
