BADAKHSHAN: Nearly a dozen people were injured when two rival religious sects clashed in northwestern Badakhshan province, an official said on Sunday.

Gen. Sayed Hussain Safawi, the provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that elders tried to break an engagement between a Sunni girl and a Shiite boy on the grounds that intermarriage between the two sects was not allowed.

The clash took place when the girl fled to her fiancé’s house, he said. Five people from the groom’s side and six people from the bride’s side were injured before police stopped the fighting.

Gen. Safawi added that the injured were taken to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Ahmad Shah, the groom’s brother, said that there had been no disputes between the two families, and that the elders had created problems by introducing sectarian issues.

GHAZNI: Three ISAF soldiers were injured on Saturday evening when their vehicle struck a roadside bomb during an operation against militants in Sra Qala area of Khogyani district, District Police Chief Bashi Habibullah said. In a separate incident in Ghazni City on Sunday, seven civilians were injured in a blast from a remote-controlled bomb planted on a bicycle.

Security personnel seized six weapons and eight motorcycles during the Sra Qala operation, which was jointly conducted by Afghan and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops, Habibullah said. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujhaid claimed that Taliban fighters had blown up three military vehicles belonging to Afghan or international forces and had inflicted casualties on 10 security personnel.

In Ghazni City, Qasim Desiwal, the former district chief of Khwaja Omari district, was among those injured, as were elderly men and children, Police Chief Zarawar Zahid told Pajhwok Afghan News. Dr. Ismail Ibrahimzai, head of the civil hospital, confirmed admitting seven injured people, and reported that all were in stable condition.

HELMAND: Police have seized 90 bottles of poisoned wine in southern Helmand province, officials said on Sunday.

The incident took place in the Sarkar area. Police have arrested a suspect, Police Officer Col. Abdul Kareem Hamidi told reporters.

Hamidi said that the wine was intended to kill Helmand citizens and authorities, and also claimed that the ISI‘s intelligence agency, was involved in the incident. Police have launched an investigation, he said.

KANDAHAR: Three people were killed and two injured in separate explosions in Kandahar province Saturday.

Two militants were killed, and one injured, trying to plant a roadside bomb in the Sya Sang area of Shah Wali Kot district, according to a statement from the governor’s office. In the Kharez district, one Kuchi was killed and another injured by a roadside bomb.

In the Spin Boldak district of the province, border police detained militant commander with a remote-controlled explosive device, according to the statement. Separately, police on Saturday night seized a motorcycle packed with explosives and defused it in the Piro Kalacha area of 10th police district of Kandahar city.

KABUL: Six International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops have been killed in separate incidents of violence in different parts of the country over the past 24 hours, the alliance said on Sunday, taking death toll of the multinational soldiers to 271 this year.

Four ISAF service members died in separate direct engagements with insurgents in eastern and southern Afghanistan on Saturday, the force said in a statement.

Another two were killed in an improvised explosive device attack in the west on Sunday, said the statement, which contained no further details.

American troops are based in the east and Italians in the west. So far 271 foreign troops, including 191 Americans, have been killed across Afghanistan since the beginning of this year. Last year’s toll was 711.

KAPISA: One civilian was killed and four others injured, among them two children, during a clash between Afghan security forces and Taliban fighters in central Kapisa province, an official said Sunday.

The incident took place late Saturday night in the Ghanikhel and Ibrahimkhel areas of the province, Padshah Gul Bakhtyar, the provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The police chief said that both sides were using heavy artillery, and that a shell struck a civilian house.

The civilian man was killed around 6:00 pm when shell fell on his house, said Faizullah, an area resident.

KUNDUZ: A roadside bomb detonated in the Gortapa area on the outskirts of Kunduz City at 10:30 am Sunday morning, damaging an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) vehicle and a bridge.

The scene was quickly cordoned off and police in the area gave no information about casualties, nor did the ISAF media office in Kabul. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that the attack killed four foreign soldiers and destroyed one of their vehicles.

MAIDAN WARDAK: A district chief survived a roadside bomb blast in central Maidan Wardak province on Sunday.

The Chack district chief, Mohammad Ismael Wafa, told Pajhwok Afghan News he was walking to his office when the blast took place near him, but he escaped unhurt.
