QALAT (PAN): The provincial deputy police chief was injured along with his bodyguard in a roadside explosion in southern Zabul province, an official said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in the Kakrano Chino area of the province while Ghulam Jailani Farahi, the deputy police chief of the province, was visiting the police check points, Abdul Nabi Elham, the provincial police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Elham added that Farahi was evacuated to the ISAF hospital in Kandahar after receiving emergency aid.

A doctor at Qalat Civil Hospital, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the evacuation of Farahi and his bodyguard to the hospital.

Abdul Hadi, an eyewitness, said that the Taliban started firing at the police vehicle after the explosion.

He said that the Kabul-Kandahar Highway was blocked to traffic after the explosion and ensuing firefight.

The Zabul police chief says two suspects were arrested after the incident.

The Taliban has not issued a comment about the incident.
