AIBAK (PAN): About 307 tonnes of food were distributed to 2,095 families in the northwestern province of Samangan, an official said on Sunday.

According to Saeed Mohammad Mohammadi, an official at the Samangan Rural Rehabilitation and Development Directorate,  the food was distributed as part of a food-for-work programme with the assistance from the World projects.

The food included 255 tonnes of wheat, 31 tonnes of pulses, 19 tonnes of oil and two tonnes of salt.

In exchange for these supplies, the laborers helped repair several kilometers of rural roads and new streets, clean 7 kilometers of canals, construct 4 kilometers of new canals, dig drains and build four water reservoirs.

Mohammadi added that the completion of these projects will provide irrigation for 100 acres of land, and will alleviate transportation problems for over 12 thousand families.

Chahari, a 42-year-old man named Khawaja Mohammad Ali of Aibak city told Pajhwok Afghan News that 21 people were digging 300 metres of drains in his village.

He says that every year floods from mountains destroy their village, but with the new drains, that problem is solved.
