KABUL):  Gen. Baba Jan succeeded Gen. Daud Daud as the commander of 303rd Pamir police zone in the northern provinces of the country, officials said on Tuesday.

He was nominated for the position by the Ministry of Interior and was appointed with the approval of the president, Ministry spokesman Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Gen. Daud Daud, the previous police chief for the northern zone, was killed in an explosion on May 28, 2011 along with provincial police head Brig. Gen. Shah Jehan Noori, two other policemen, and two German soldiers. The explosion took place in the governor’s office during a high-level meeting in Takhar province.

Ten other people were injured in the blast, including Takhar governor Abdul Jabar Taqwa, German commander of ISAF in the northern zone Gen. Marks Nip and three other German soldiers.

Baba Jan was a general under President Najeebullah and joined the Afghan Northern Alliance led by Ahmad Shah Massoud after the victory of Mujahidin.

He fought under Massoud against Gulbuddin Hekmetyar’s Hizb-i-Islami. He worked as a provincial police chief in Kabul and Herat provinces after the collapse of Taliban government.

The newly appointed commander will travel to Mazar-i-Sharif and assume his new post officially in the next few days, a spokesman for the 303rd Pamir zone, Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, said.
