Conflicting claims made about Uruzgan clash

Jul 19, 2011 - 14:34

TIRINKOT (PANinfo-icon): Eleven local policemen and two fighters were killed during a clash in central Uruzgan province, the Talibaninfo-icon claimed on Tuesday.

The clash was touched off by a militant attack on police checkpoints in the Ferozi area of Khas Uruzgan district late on Monday night, the provincial crime branch chief said.

Col. Gulab Khan said the policemen suffered no casualties in the clash, which left two insurgents dead.

But a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, claimed the fighters had killed 11 members of the local police force.

Elsewhere in the province, four rockets were fired at a military airbase in Tirinkot, the provincial capital, Khan said. The rocket strike caused no damage.
