MEHTARLAM (PAN) said on Tuesday. However, residents alleged the dead were civilians.
In search of the rebel leader blamed for facilitating suicide attacks in the area, the combined force raided a compound in the district, where several insurgents engaged the force throughout the night, the alliance said in a statement. “The force, responding to enemy fire, killed five insurgents and wounded another. One local female had minor wounds as a result of the engagement. She was treated on-site, and released after being assessed in good health.”
However, residents claimed three civilians were killed and four others injured during the overnight raid in the Pachayan village of Qarghayee. The men mistook the soldiers for thieves, who often wear Afghan army uniform, said Attiqullah Abdul Rahimzai, a resident of the area and member of the Laghman Provincial Council.
Following the gunfire, the joint force raided the house and killed three people, he said. Another three members of the family were wounded, he added.
The victims included two women, according to another resident, Mohammad Alam. Belonging to the Khogyani district of neighbouring Nangarhar province, the men had been working as farmers in Qarghayee for the past 10 years, he said.
