QALAT (PAN): A commander was among 14 militants killed during a counterinsurgency operation in southern Zabul province, police said on Tuesday.
The offensive was carried out in the Arghandad district on Monday night, operations chief at the provincial police headquarters, Col. Mohammad Hakim, told Pajhwok Afghan News. The operation involved Afghan and foreign troops, he said.
Resident Akhtar said the dead militants included a commander named Mullah Mohammad Khan. A clean-up operation was still ongoing in the area, he said.
Meanwhile, two people were killed and two children sustained shrapnel injuries when they stepped on a hidden landmine in the Arghandad district late on Monday, according to Col. Mohammad Hakim.
He said the incident happened in the Threzo area. The dead included a woman, he said. The victims were on foot when they stepped on the booby- trapped landmine.
The injured children were taken to a health facility of foreign troops in the district.
Residents said the dead and wounded belonged to the same family.
Meanwhile, a roadside bombing killed a couple and injured their two children elsewhere in the province.
