FAIZABAD (PAN): Hundreds of household animals have died of diseases in the remote northeastern province of Badakhshan, officials said on Tuesday.

Nearly 600 cattle died over the past two weeks of enterotoxaemia and anthrax in Zebak district, Mir Ahmad Zaghim, the district chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

A district council member, Abdul Wahid Tabibi, confirmed the diseases, saying the conditions were found in animals in Kofab, Khowan and Raghistan districts. He said around 40 to 50 livestock, most of them cows, had died so far.

The agriculture department had sent a veterinary team to the areas, but it was unable to control the situation due to a lack of medicine, he said.

Ghulam Hassan, an agriculture department official, said they had requested the agriculture ministry in Kabul to provide the required medicine.

Another district council member, Abdul Satar, complained the governor and other officials had done nothing to control the diseases.

But the governor’s spokesman, Abdul Maroof Rasekh, said the Agha Khan Foundation (AKF) and the Dutch Veterinary Medical Association had been asked for assistance.
