MEHTARLAM (PANinfo-icon): The government has implemented several reconstructioninfo-icon projects in eastern Laghman province, where some schemes are at different stages of completion, officials said on Sunday.

About 60 reconstruction projects are underway in the provincial capital Mehtarlam and five other districts, senior government official Muhammad Shirin Nusrat said. The schemes have provided employment opportunities for area residents.

"We are focused on construction of clinics, schools, watercourses and protective walls in remote areas," Nusrat said, adding they were doing their bit to execute reconstruction projects in all parts of the province.

Director of Economy Eng. Muhammad Agha Mubarez said different ministries had approved 933 million afghanis ($19.7m) in development funds for the province this year.

"There are some districts which are unable to spend even 50 percent of reconstruction funds," the director said. Certain districts that could not get their funds from relevant ministries, he continued.

The deputy chief of the provincial council, Gulzar Sangarwal, said construction of roads had been completed in four districts. Educationinfo-icon, healthinfo-icon, electricity and irrigations projects have also been implemented.

He stressed the need for appointing professional people and experts to ensure timely completion of development projects and address problems of the masses.

Mehtarlam resident Nusratullah voiced satisfaction over the reconstruction projects. "Electricity is the biggest problem of our area," he said, urging the government to pay attention to their energy requirement.
